Over the years Southampton and Liverpool have enjoyed a close connection with several players deciding to swap the sunny south cost for the north-west of Merseyside. Tom Robertson was the first to move back in May of 1902 for a now unknown fee, all the way up to the man pictured above, who moved this year for a whopping 75 million pounds.
Joseph Hoare was the first man to move for a fee, in 1903, as he moved for a huge 75 pounds from Southampton to Liverpool. It is quite staggering about how transfer fees have inflated in such a short amount of time and these two clubs have not always enjoyed sharing players.
Between 1912 and 1994, a period of 82 years, no players moved directly from the Saints to the Reds. However, in the last fourteen years, a staggering eight players have moved from the south coast to Merseyside.
So how good is your football knowledge on these two clubs? Some of these signings were successes at Liverpool whilst others flopped but they were all missed at Southampton who would have hoped to keep hold of a few of their star men. Recent years would suggest that this well-trodden one-way path could continue to provide fruitful for the Anfield side and that Southampton fans may feel more pain as their players departed for Merseyside.
