The Golden Boot winner from the World Cup in 2014, James Rodriguez, may not have completely fulfilled his potential after a big-money move to Real Madrid but he can still produce moments of magic on his day. His two-year loan at Bayern Munich came to an end this year and he now looks set to leave Los Blancos on a permanent basis.
He is likely to switch across to Atleti this summer with the club on a mission to revamp their squad after a summer exodus. Antoine Griezmann, Rodri and Diego Godin have already departed with several others as manager Diego Simeone looks to give his side a fresh new look in an attempt to compete with the big spenders of the league, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The switch across Madrid is one that only a few players undertake and only ten have done so since the turn of the century, appearing for the first teams. This has become a much more frequent swap in recent years as six players have made the move in the past three seasons after a spell of no transfers between the two clubs between 2011 and 2017. As we have seen in recent years, it is less of a stigma to move than it was earlier in the noughties.
Of course, direct transfers between the two clubs are incredibly rare with only a handful of players switching from one side of the city to the other. Instead, many players move away from Spain, before rejoining on the other half of Madrid.
But how good is your Spanish knowledge and can you remember some of these controversial 21st century transfers?
