It seems remarkable that 1999 was 20 years ago but it was the year that produced one of the classic FA Cup games. In the replay of the semi-final, the two titans of English football collided as Manchester United took on Arsenal.

It was the hottest rivalry in English football at the time, with Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger at the helms of two of best teams in the country at the time. Both sides were battling for the Premier League title whilst Manchester United were also on their way to winning an unprecedented treble, including this FA Cup success.

Arsenal stood in there way and the game at Villa Park would go down in history as one of the best clashes the competition has ever seen. United’s team were made up of several youngsters whilst Arsenal were packed full of big names. A certain two titans in midfield went head-to-head once again with one of them getting sent off and almost costing his side the game.

United went in front in the game before Arsenal struck with an equaliser. The controversial moment came as Arsenal were awarded a 90th minute penalty to win the tie. This would have sent them to Wembley and ended United’s hopes of winning the treble but amazingly the penalty was saved.
