As cold weather continues to hamper jumps racing, the all-weather malarky is all that’s left to keep racing fans entertained. And it’s to the artificial surface at Kempton that we go for today’s tip.
Jim Bolger’s 2000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach, who is only just settling into his life at stud, has one of his progeny making a second racecourse visit this afternoon in the 16:40 - Matchbook VIP Novice Stakes (Div 1) at Kempton.
Tum Tum is the spit of his old man, and while he might not have just the same level ability, Martyn Meade’s inmate looks a capable sort and can win on his first all-weather appearance.
Making his debut over the straight 7f at Newmarket last time, he was a touch tardy getting into things, before finding his stride and travelling nicely, staying on into fifth and recording an impressive speed figure in the process.
He should have learned plenty for that, and given that the horse that was a half-length ahead of him on that day has come out and won a class 4 event on the all-weather since, Tum Tum should be amongst the best of them in this class 5 affair.
The in-form Josy Gordon is aboard once more, and he can go in at a fair price.
