Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld helped The Netherlands retain their Betway World Cup Of Darts crown on Sunday night as the Dutch duo beat Scotland (Gary Anderson & Peter Wright) 3-1 in the final at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt.
Heading into the evening session there were four nations left in the event and the first semi-final saw Scotland take on Australia (Simon Whitlock & Kyle Anderson). and having shared the singles matches it was Scotland that prevailed 4-3 in the doubles match to progress to the final, as they looked to try and win their first World Cup crown.
Netherlands made much lighter work of their semi-final as they played Belgium (Kim Huybrechts & Dimitri Van den Bergh), who had downed England (Rob Cross & Dave Chisnall) in the quarter-finals, but they were no match for the Dutch as van Gerwen beat Huybrechts 4-2 before van Barneveld downed Van den Bergh by the same scoreline to land the tie 2-0.
In a best-of-five match final it was world number one van Gerwen that gave Netherlands the advantage with a comfortable 4-2 win over Wright, but Anderson levelled up the scores with a 4-1 win over van Barneveled, as they headed into the doubles clash all-square.
A comfortable 4-1 doubles win for the Dutch meant they only needed to win one of the two remaining singles matches, and van Gerwen put on a show for the vocal Frankfurt crowd, as he whitewashed Anderson 4-0 to secure the Netherlands a record-equalling fourth World Cup crown, and it meant van Barneveld and Wright's singles clash was not needed, and the Dutch pair could celebrate claiming the world crown.
