Liverpool’s staccato season continued to stutter as Brighton & Hove Albion thoroughly beat them 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The defeat sees Jurgen Klopp’s side tumble to eighth, while their conquerors move above them into seventh place in the league.

It could have been even worse for the Merseysiders. Brighton had an early penalty awarded when Solly March was taken down by Alisson. However, he was adjudged offside after receiving ex-Red Adam Lallana’s pass in the box.

Albion would get their opener though and March would be the scorer this time. Alexis Mac Allister seized upon some lax defending from Joel Matip. His pass found Kaoru Mitoma who slotted in for March to finish.

Liverpool looked lifeless, having not registered a shot on target during the entirety of the first half. March doubled up when he turned home an Evan Ferguson cross. Then substitute Danny Welbeck rounded off the scoring, netting his first goal of the season to hand Roberto De Zerbi’s side an impressive and deserved victory.

There is scarce joy to be found on the blue half of Merseyside either. Everton were beaten 2-1 by Southampton. James Ward-Prowese netted a double, with his second taking him to sixteen direct free kick goals in the Premier League. He sits just two behind David Beckham in this metric.

The end of the game saw Everton fans stage a sit-in protest at their ownership. It is a discontent that has been festering for a long time. While the support are broadly behind the players and beleaguered manager Frank Lampard, they have reached their limited with Farhad Moshiri.

Nottingham Forest continued to quieten the doom-mongers with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City. This East Midlands derby was settled by a brace from Brennan Johnson. The result sees the Foxes a precarious two points above the relegation zone. Steve Cooper’s Tricky Trees are now five points removed from the drop, a position that looked unthinkable a few weeks ago.

Daniel Podence’s 48th minute strike proved the difference at Molineux as Wolverhampton Wanderers hastened the slide of West Ham United. Serious questions will be asked of Hammers head coach David Moyes now, as his side made it seven Premier League games without a win. Wolves finally got another win on the board to back up their improving performances under new manager Julen Lopetegui.
