Only five players have ever won back-to-back Golden Boot awards in the Premier League era.

It’s a pretty illustrious group too, featuring the league’s all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer, the sensational Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, former speedster Michael Owen, the Dutch destroyer Robin Van Persie, and the newest edition to the party, Tottenham and England star Harry Kane.

Players of the calibre of Cristiano Ronaldo, Didier Drogba, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Aguero (so far) were unable to achieve this pretty impressive feat of consecutive top goalscorer gongs, but this season Mo Salah has a cracking chance of increasing membership to six players.

The Liverpool forward enjoyed a stunning debut 2017/18 season with the Merseyside club, during which he fired in a staggering 32 top-flight goals in only 36 matches: a brand spanking new record in a 38-game Premier League campaign.

Let’s not forget he also bagged the PFA Players' Player of the Year, Football Writers' Player of the Year, and PFA Fans' Player of the Year accolades, and later the 2018 FIFA Puskas Award.

Salah registered only three goals in his opening eight league games of the current, an underwhelming return given his stunning goalscoring exploits last term. However, the Egyptian has since accumulated 13 goals in his preceding 15 games to enhance his tally to 16 goals, meaning he’s top of the goalscorers pile after 23 games.

With 15 matches still left on the board, and Liverpool gunning for that elusive first Premier League, you’d back Salah to significantly increase his total return, and it’s no surprise to see the 26-year-old as the odds-on favourite to become the sixth ever player to win back-to-back Golden Boots.

Kane, out until at least March, is next in the running with 14 goals, alongside Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Eden Hazard, Raheem Sterling, Aguero, and Callum Wilson are a further four goals adrift.

Next up for Salah and Liverpool is Leicester (Wednesday), with whom he has three league goals against in three games at the Reds.
