Cristiano Ronaldo’s Poor Form Continues As Real Madrid Lose 2-1 To Minnows Girona

European champions Real Madrid have lost 2-1 to recently promoted to Girona in their worst result of the season. Real Madrid are now eight points behind Barcelona and face an uphill battle if they are to retain their La Liga title.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in awful form this season, even if you take into consideration the fact that he was banned for the first five games. Last week he picked up ‘The Best’ award but he has been far from that this season, with just one goal and no assists in the 2017/18 campaign, are the days of him terrorising defences over?

CR7 has attempted 28 shots on goal this season with just one finding the net. Players such as Iago Aspas and Joaquin are outscoring him this season and as a player who prides himself on goal-scoring prowess, this simply is not good enough.

Real Madrid went into the game on a run of 13 successive away La Liga wins and they actually had the lead in this game when a Ronaldo shot was parried into the path of Isco who tapped in. The hosts could not get to grips with their far superior visitors for the first half but kept within touching distance heading into the interval.

After the break, five minutes of madness turned the game around. First Cristhian Stuani, ex-Middlesbrough player kept his cool to slot past the oncoming Kiko Casilla before Cristian Portu put the minnows in front to wonderful scenes.

Manchester City full-back Pablo Maffeo gained praise from Lionel Messi for his performance earlier in the season and he will be delighted with his performance up against Cristiano Ronaldo this afternoon. It was his shot which was intercepted by Portu who backheeled home in wonderful fashion.

Zinedine Zidane made subs in desperation but could not force an equaliser and Girona held on for one of the best results in their club’s history. See where this leaves Real Madrid in the La Liga table here.
