Championship side Derby County have completed the loan signing of Chelsea star Mason Mount despite interest from PSV Eindhoven and Ajax, two clubs who could have offered the 19-year-old Champions League football.
Instead, Chelsea and the player himself have decided that he would benefit from a season playing in England as he looks to establish himself as one of England’s top young players. Last season he spent the season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem and impressed hitting nine goals from an attacking midfield role. He also scooped their player of the season award after a series of top performances.
It was thought he would play at a higher level than the Championship this season, however, Derby boss Frank Lampard has pulled a few strings with his former employees and secured the signing of the highly-rated youngster.
First-team football is thought to be a key factor in this deal for the player who won the Golden Player of the Tournament at the 2017 Europeans Under-19 Championship, which England won. The next step up for Mount is an England under 21 call up and an impressive season for Derby should put him in Gareth Southgate’s future plans.
This is a big coup for Derby and Lampard should look to build his County side around this promising talent. The future looks bright for England with several young players coming through but it is imperative that these players get first team football and Derby will provide Mason Mount with just that.
It will be interesting to see his progression under Lampard.
