Relegated Southampton will travel to Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the Championship season for the second tier's first Friday night game of the 2023-24 campaign on August 4 in Russell Martin's first game as Saints boss. Leicester City will host Coventry City on the Sunday in an East v West Midlands derby, while Leeds United entertain Cardiff City in the other games involving teams taking the drop from the Premier League.
League One champions Plymouth Argyle get underway on home soil as they welcome Neil Warnock's Huddersfield Town, while Ipswich Town start off their campaign with a trip to the Stadium of Light to face last year's Championship play-off semi-finalists Sunderland. The Tractor Boys' first East Anglian derby of the term against Norwich City takes place on December 16 at Portman Road. The reverse fixture at Carrow Road takes place on April 6.
From the teams relegated from the Championship, Blackpool start off at home against Burton Albion, Wigan Athletic travel to Pride Park to take on Derby County and Reading will host Peterborough United. After winning League Two, Leyton Orient get life back in the third tier underway with a trip to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic while two of the automatically-promoted sides, Stevenage and Northampton Town face each other first at Sixfields, and Carlisle United host Fleetwood Town at Brunton Park.
National League champions Wrexham's return to Football League life starts with a home clash with MK Dons, who came down from the third tier, at the Racecourse Ground. Play-off winners Notts County head down south to do battle with Sutton United.
Of the other relegated teams from League One, Morecambe host Walsall, Accrington Stanley welcome Newport County, and Forest Green Rovers entertain promotion chasers Salford City.
