Feeble Leicester Defending Intensifies Pressure On Brendan Rodgers

Leicester City's woes continued with a fifth straight defeat in the Premier League

Leicester City are in huge trouble. Six matches, five defeats and a defence that looks weaker with each passing game, Brendan Rodgers’ job is in grave danger. His side were well beaten by Brighton & Hove Albion 5-2 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday despite leading and coming from behind on one occasion. It was a fifth straight defeat in the Premier League and the pressure on his position will only intensify following this poor performance.

This Foxes defence is the weakest we have seen since their first season back in the top flight in 2014-15. They cannot stop conceding goals and they have only been able to achieve one clean sheet in their last 29 Premier League outings - that is relegation standards. Last week’s Wesley Fofana departure is already proving just how much of a problem Leicester have at the back.

Turkish international Caglar Soyuncu was omitted from the squad this afternoon amidst speculation that he could be heading to his homeland to join Galatasaray. Whether this proposed exit is a football decision or a financial decision (as the Foxes are in a difficult situation regarding Financial Fair Play) remains to be seen. The one serious signing made by Leicester this summer came on the final day of the transfer window as defender Wout Faes joined from Stade de Reims.

The defender wasn’t involved on the south coast due to issues with his work permit but despite having only just touched ground in England, it is likely he will be thrown straight into the field for the gruelling battle that lies ahead for Leicester this year. Against the Seagulls, they were far too easy to break down and they faced chance after chance while showing no organisation or discipline - summing up their horrific run of defeats. It is also worth noting that this is the worst run of results Rodgers has experienced in his Premier League career.

In the story of the match itself, it was a fast start from the Foxes as Kelechi Iheanacho fired them in front inside the first minute as the forward found himself unmarked at the back post for a simple finish. But their joy didn't last long as Brighton equalised as Solly March met an inviting Leandro Trossard cross with his head, and it found its way into the net off Luke Thomas.

Minutes later and the game was completely turned on its head. A poor pass from James Maddison sent the Seagulls away and Moises Caicedo made no mistake in punishing the Englishman for his error, firing the ball past Danny Ward to put Brighton ahead. After a lengthy spell of dominance, Brighton were unlocked by a sublime pass by Youri Tielemans who found Patson Daka and the forward slotted past Robert Sanchez to level the score.

Wary of how much his side were struggling defensively, Rodgers brought off Harvey Barnes for Timothy Castagne at the break to try and tighten things up as they moved to a back five. The Leicester boss would have been relieved to see Alexis Mac Allister’s piledriver into the top corner minutes after the restart ruled out by VAR - which was having a disastrous weekend across the Premier League.

Brighton were eventually able to regain the lead just after the hour mark as Pascal Groß played the ball into Trossard who found the far corner with his strike. The Foxes soon crumbled. Wilfred Ndidi gave away a penalty for shoving Trossard and Mac Allister converted, with VAR having no chance of ruling that one out. He later capped off a perfect afternoon at the death with a stunning free-kick to rub more salt into the wounds of the Foxes.

For Graham Potter’s side, their strong start to the season continues as they pick up win number four of their opening six matches leaving them in fourth. As for Leicester, it seems as though a change in the dugout could be imminent as they lie rock bottom of the table.
