Football Chants - Where Do They Originate From?

Football chants can range from intuitive, brilliant and clever right down to simply shouting your teams name. (Chelsea, Arsenal and ‘United’ I’m looking at you.)

Below, we look at the classic songs that some of the great football chants originate from.

Rodger Hodgson - Logical song (Oh Scotty Sinclair, oh he is so wonderful)

This chant from Celtic is the catchiest of the year and once you have heard it you won’t stop singing it for a week. It is dedicated to their English winger Scott Sinclair who has been quite a hit with the Celtic Bhoys.

The original hit was by the Rodger Hodgson the lead singer of Supertramp, named the logical song it really is a catchy tune. It reached number seven in the UK and was a number one hit in Canada. Enjoy both versions below.

Gala -Freed from Desire (Will Grigg’s on fire)

The hit chant from Euro 2016 came for a player who did not appear on the pitch for a single minute. That did not stop the Northern Ireland fans singing this hit song about their forward. This chant was originally created by Newcastle fans for Aleksandar Mitrovic but as he fell out of form a Wigan fan posted the chant on YouTube and it went viral.

The original song, released in 1996, hit number one in Belgium and reached number 2 in the UK. See below the Northern Ireland fans singing the hit song.

Beach Boys – Sloop John B (This is the best trip, I’ve ever been on)

This tune has been turned into many different chants including: “I wanna go home, ‘insert opponent’s town’ is a s***hole I wanna go home.” Which is sung by pretty much every club when they are away from home.

However, we have chosen Blackpool’s memorable: “This is the best trip, I’ve ever been on’ to feature here from their time in the Premier League. The original Beach Boys hit number two in the UK and Canada and is an all-time classic. Enjoy.

2 Unlimited - There’s no limit (Kolo/Yaya Toure)

This is a real 90’s banger, transformed into a classic. The Kolo/Yaya song became a viral sensation, being sung by various football teams, partygoers abroad and even at the darts. It has been brought to the public’s attention as Kolo Toure was filmed singing it with his Celtic teammates as they celebrated another league title

The original tune by 2 unlimited reached number one in the UK and was a 90’s dance hit.

Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (We’ve got Payet/Ozil/Alli)

The most over sung chant in the Premier League for the past few years has been this one. But the song it originates from is again catchy and was a number one hit. Most clubs have sung this song about their star man, starting with West Ham about their now hated Dimitri Payet.

Hopefully with his exit we have also see the end of this overused chant.

Inspiral Carpets – This is how it feels (to be City)

Manchester United fans use this song to taunt Manchester City signing: “This is how it feels to be City this is how it feels to be small, this is how it feels when your passport is back in the drawer. However, City fans thought up their own inventive response singing: “You signed Phil Jones we signed Kun Aguero” instead of the last line. Excellent response.

This original hit was released in 1990, only peaking in the UK at number 14. It is remarkable that this little-known tune is now sung on the terraces in Manchester.
