Arsenal target Joachim Low is unlikely to be the man to succeed Arsenal Wenger this summer. The Germany boss, who is aiming to defend football’s greatest prize this summer, has said the last World Cup left him ‘burnt out’ and feels this tournament would leave him feeling unprepared to take on a Premier League season.
Low is contracted with the national side until after the 2020 European Championship, so it would have taken a big offer from the Gunners to prize him away. The German’s stance may make any negotiations pointless as he feels the challenge of rebuilding the north London side would be too much for him to take on after a World Cup.
Low is planning on following the same formula from 2014, where after months of intense build-up and a successful World Cup campaign that lasted a month, he took a long break to rest and recuperate before heading back into his job. He plans to have a similar long break following the tournament in Russia, as a World Cup provides the toughest test for the world’s best managers.
Arsenal’s international squad are likely to be back in training before the World Cup final on July 15 whilst their first friendlies are just a week later, meaning Low’s preferred long break is simply impossible. He has not worked with a club since leaving Austria Wien in 2004 and the day-to-day running of a top European club would be a completely different challenge for him.
Low would have to think long and hard and be fully prepared for his jump back into club management but unfortunately for Arsenal fans, it is unlikely that he will take that risk with them. Arsenal will turn their attention to Luis Enrique, after Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone said he is not interested in the job and Juventus boss Massimo Allegri is off limits until the conclusion of the Serie A season.
