Last night saw the biggest drama of the 2022 World Cup so far with Belgium and Germany being dumped out in the group stage. There was even a tiny moment when it looked like Spain would join them with Costa Rica taking the lead against the Germans.
Luis Enrique’s side managed to qualify though, and the likes of Switzerland, Uruguay and Ghana will be hoping to join them in the knockout stages later today.
In Group G, Brazil have obviously already qualified after two wins from two so far. A win or draw for them this evening will be enough to top the group.
The Swiss will advance with a win over Serbia tonight, and can even qualify with a draw if Cameroon fail to beat top-of-the-table Brazil.
Cameroon probably have the most unlikely route to the last 16. They must beat Brazil, hope Switzerland lose to Serbia, while also bettering that result. They can also qualify by beating Brazil if Switzerland draw with Serbia, as long as the African side score more than the Swiss overall.
Bottom side Serbia can qualify with a win over Switzerland, as long as Cameroon lose or draw against Brazil. If Serbia and Cameroon both win, Serbia would have to beat Switzerland by a greater margin to reach the last 16.
And finally, Group H. It was written in the stars that Luis Suarez’s Uruguay side would have to face Ghana for a place in the next round after THAT handball incident 12 years ago in South Africa - which he still refuses to apologise for.
Portugal are through already. They only need to avoid defeat to finish top of the group after beating Ghana and Uruguay so far.
Ghana will advance if they can beat Uruguay. A draw will also be enough to take them through as long as Portugal are not beaten by South Korea.
South Korea will head into the last 16 with a win, if Ghana lose and they better Uruguay’s result against the African side. They can also qualify with a win if Ghana draw, but Korea would need to overturn a goal difference deficit.
It’s a fairly simple equation for Uruguay. Beat Ghana and hope South Korea lose or draw with Brazil and they’re through. They can also reach the last 16 stage if South Korea win as well, but they would need to better their goal difference, which is currently one greater.
