Injury Ravaged Liverpool Face Battle With Chelsea For Serie A Striker
12:25, 16 Oct 2018

With the injuries mounting up at Premier League title-chasers Liverpool, the Reds are set to launch a stunning bid in January for one of Serie A’s hottest properties.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané have returned from international duty with respective injuries to leave manager Jürgen Klopp with well-bitten fingernails.

Though Daniel Sturridge has stepped up to the plate admirably - memorably with a sensational equaliser to share the points with former club Chelsea - one does not need to go into his injury history, with the Englishman completely blighted by set-backs over the years that have left him teetering close to the exit.

Rai Sport reports that as a result, Liverpool will step up their interest for Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne when the transfer window reopens in the new year.

Recently, Insigne’s injury time winner in the Champions League group stage match at the Stadio San Paolo sent Liverpool back to Merseyside glum, but the Italian has ultimately commanded attention from those at the top. He's currently battling man of the moment Krzysztof Piatek at the top of the Serie A goalscorers table, with six strikes in eight fixtures.

Insigne has 116 goals in 260 appearances for Napoli and would bring a wealth of experience to Anfield. The 27-year-old, approaching the expected prime of his career, would contribute to a formidable forward-line, and Liverpool are expected to face stiff competition for his signature with rivals Chelsea, who have his former manager Maurizio Sarri at the helm.

Though a Liverpool starting XI is intimidating for any side, Jürgen Klopp knows full well that injuries to key players could prove to be detrimental to their silverware ambitions this season, and will look to rectify these early warning signs in the mere baptism of the new campaign.

James Milner and Virgil Van Dijk are also nursing dubious problems which fans will be hopeful doesn’t set a precedent as the congested festive period comes steamrolling towards them.

Liverpool - who worryingly haven’t won any of their last four games in all competitions - next play Huddersfield in the Premier League this weekend.
