Jadon Sancho’s rapid ascent to the top of world football has continued in Germany this afternoon after the English youngster assisted Marco Reus as their Dortmund side secured a 2-1 win against Werder Bremen to stay out in front in the Bundesliga title race.
18-year-old Sancho turned down a lucrative offer from Manchester City and switched to German football in an effort to secure first-team football for himself in what has been a spectacular success.
His performances on the banks of the Rhine have been enough to earn Sancho, who wears the no. 7 jersey vacated by Ousmane Dembélé, his first senior England call-up from manager Gareth Southgate.
“It was very tough, especially [missing] my mum,” Sancho told the Telegraph of the experience earlier this year. “But if you really believe in yourself, you have to do what's best for you. I'm now with my dad in Germany in an apartment.”
“Not everyone is comfortable moving from home. If you're ready to play abroad and you believe in yourself, why not?”
Sancho has been linked to all of European football’s big hitters in a move like the last holder of his shirt made. But, having been quick to leave a club where his chance of first-team football was limited, he’s not in a rush to leave Dortmund.
“I'm happy to be a part of Dortmund,” he said. “I have to say thank you to the manager [Lucien Favre] for playing me and trusting me. It's a noisy stadium and it's not every day that you get to play in front of 80,000 people. I'm just grateful.”
