The excitement at Anfield is now at fever pitch with Liverpool four points clear at the top of the Premier League and enjoying one of the best seasons in recent memory.
The wheels came off slight at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night when the Reds suffered their first defeat of the campaign in the league but they are still in pole position for a famous title win thanks to a remarkable first half of the campaign.
The transfer gossip in January is always tough for fans to pick over as they try and decide what to believe and what to avoid but there are growing calls for Jurgen Klopp to boost his Liverpool squad to help the club get over the line.
The games are going to be coming thick and fast between now and May and there is still as light doubt about the depth of the squad at the sharp end of the pitch. Are the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Divock Origi good enough to cover for one of the front three should an injury or two occur?
Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino remain the key players for Klopp but they have been very lucky with injuries so far this term and you do feel that at some stage that is going to turn.
There is one player potentially on the market which has the ideal profile for Liverpool and that is Timo Werner.
The German International has been linked with a host of clubs over the past 18 months but it down now appear as if he is finally going to leave RB Leipzig at some point in 2018.
The Bundesliga club are clearly reluctant to let his contract wind down too much further and that should have alerted Liverpool in particular with the young forward a perfect fit for this energetic and creative Klopp team.
The 22-year-old can play across all three positions in a front three and has been a regular scorer once again this season with 13 goals and three assists from 21 games which highlights his importance.
A regular for Germany, Werner has pace and skill to go with his attacking threat in the final third and if there is a chance for Liverpool to grab their man this month, it would be foolish to pass it up. It will be much tougher in the summer with plenty of clubs likely to be sniffing around a player who is clearly destined for big things and given the situation Liverpool find themselves in, it would make perfect sense to do a deal now.
Dominic Solanke has already left the club and with Divock Origi expected to follow suit in the next couple of weeks, the addition of Werner would see the Liverpool squad end January much stronger than when it started.
Long term target Christian Pulisic has already decided to move to Chelsea instead, but was that by design from Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards? Speculation has been rife about the club finding an alternative to the American winger and in Timo Werner, they might just have found the perfect attacking addition.
