Manchester United have sensationally sacked Jose Mourinho.
In a short statement this morning, United said: "Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.
"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."
The short statement fails to mention any of Mourinho's achievements while in Manchester.
Michael Carrick is one name to be mentioned as the potential caretaker.
The club are currently in sixth position in the Premier League, almost 20 points adrift of the leaders. Their performance against Liverpool on Sunday - losing tamely 3-1 at Anfield proved to be the final game for the Portugese. It was widely reported that Mourinho wouldn't be sacked because of the cost involved - he'd pocket millions in compensation.
Mourinho looked to have bought himself some more time in charge of the club when he beat Fulham last weekend however a whole host of poor performances mean his position at the club was simply untenable at this point of the season. United are already out of the League Cup this season after a dismal defeat to Derby, they are out of the Premier League title race - a whopping 19 point behind rivals Liverpool and they are facing the tough prospect of a last 16 tie with PSG in the Champions League.
