Lack Of Transfer Activity At Tottenham Shouldn't Detract From Their Continued Progress On And Off The Pitch

Matej Vydra's move from Derby to Burnley means that Tottenham Hotspur are the only Premier League or Champions League side to not make a single signing so far this summer transfer window, with just two days left to go.

Spurs move into their new stadium next month and despite manager Mauricio Pochettino claiming that he wanted £150 million to spend on new recruits at the end of last season, the clock is ticking at White Hart Lane and the noises coming out of Spurs Lodge is that there might not be any new faces coming in.

There's a mixed feeling amongst supporters.

There's a growing frustration amongst many who want to see the squad bolstered, but there's also a line of thought that if it ain't broke don't fix it. Continuity has seen Pochettino's side finish 3-2-3 in the last three seasons with his team punching well above their weight when it comes to their wage bill. If the club can hold onto the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen then they look well equipped to do well again this season, in situ in their new flashy stadium from the 16th September.

It's not been totally quiet in the boardroom. Pochettino himself signed a new deal at the club whilst improved contracts have been signed by Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Eriksen making sure the spine of the team are in good shape.

Tottenham's talisman Kane's contract is worth £62.4m over the next six years, breaking the wage structure at the club and moving them into the big league.

Tying up the other senior players to improved contracts enhances the continuity at the club and with first class training facilities and a superb state of the stadium on the close horizon there's plenty to be cheerful for Spurs fans.

Some Tottenham supporters would argue that they lack depth in the forward position, with Spaniard Fernando Llorente really failing to hit it off in Kane's absences last season and becoming a bit of a figure of fun amongst fans. Moussa Sissoko is another player widely derised by Spurs fans and if Pochettino could offload the former Newcastle midfielder before Thursday's 5pm deadline that would probably appease some of the more demanding followers.

Confidence should be high amongst the squad, who are a tightly knit bunch. The likes of Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen, Moussa Dembele and the England players Kane, Ali, Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose and Eric Dier only returned to action on Monday following the World Cup along with winner Hugo Lloris.

Spurs have started slowly in the league all three of the last seasons which has seen them end up in the top three come May. Harry Kane's August goalscoring apart, the team took their time to settle into life at Wembley last season and they'll play three of their first four games away from home this, including one game at Wembley against Fulham.

Jack Grealish has been the main name linked with a move to Spurs, but would it be enough for the fans? With Daniel Levy braced for another approach from Manchester United for centre back Toby Alderweireld before Thursday's deadline, it would be a hammer blow to the quality of the Spurs squad, even though they proved they could cope with out him last term.

The Aston Villa midfielder would add something different to the Spurs squad and there's every chance that Pochettino could work wonders with him given his track record with young players. It seems that Villa aren't prepared to sell though so it's watch this space.

With such a settled first eleven and a fit Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura to add some quality in the final third, Spurs fans would do well not to panic too much at this stage.
