Graeme Souness has given his views on Wilfried Zaha, who has become Crystal Palace’s record Premier League goalscorer this afternoon after bagging v Watford.

The Liverpool icon was full of praise for the Ivorian forward and was clearly mesmerised by his first half display: “He is sensational, I can see him playing for Real Madrid, that’s how good he is.

“I think there’s maybe a handful of players, even outside our own league, that have got his kind of ability.

“His change of direction, his balance he’s got is quite unique, and I think that’s why he gets fouled and should get more penalties than he does. I don’t see him as a diver.

Real Madird are looking for a forward to replace the departed Cristiano Ronaldo, who left for Juventus in a deal worth £100m. Perhaps Souness has a point and the Champions League holders are going to make a shock move for the Palace man!

Souness continued: “But I think he’s got quite a unique talent and with the utmost respect to Crystal Palace, maybe he has been scarred by the experience at Man United, but he’s ready for a big, big club. The biggest clubs.

“Again with the utmost respect to Palace, if he stays here throughout his career he will end up with no trophies, no medals and say ‘what if?’.

“I think he’s ready now to go, even if it means going outside to the big two in Spain, I think both of them would welcome him with open arms.

“He’s a door-opener, there just isn’t too many of those players around.

Zaha decided against playing for England and instead chose to represent his native Ivory Coast on the international stage. That could be a move that the FA hugely regret as they attempted to convince him to play for the Three Lions.

Souness finished by saying: “He’s unique in our football, almost unique in our football and I am an enormous fan of him.

“I think of Laurie Cunningham who left West Brom and went to Real Madrid.

“He is in that league, he has got the stuff that gets you on the edge of your seat.

"He is a unique player.”
