Manchester United Fans Rip Into Scott McTominay As He Hides Behind Free Kick Wall - Then Southampton Score!

Is this the image that is going to define Manchester United's season?

Trailing 1-0 at second from bottom Southampton, the home side were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. As the Manchester United wall lined up ready for Cedric to try his luck, TV viewers caught sight of Scott McTominay kneeling behind the wall looking like he was about to propose.

The players shielded the player from sight and he only got up when Cedric's shot was nestling in the corner of the net with David de Gea completely beaten.

United were 2-0 down inside 20 minutes and Jose Mourinho's controversial team selection was starting to look like a really bad idea.

Mourinho made several changes from the team which had narrowly beaten Young Boys in the Champions League in midweek and brought back Romelu Lukaku into the starting XI. There was no place for Anthony Martial despite him being widely regarded as United's best player this season.

Pressure was piled on Mourinho as well as his opposite number Mark Hughes heading into this game and it looked like Mourinho would have to deliver an epic interval team-talk but United hauled themselves back into the game with two goals before half time from Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera.

Mourinho has options on the bench to change things but he stated before the game that his hands were tied because of injuries to key players, forcing him to name a rather surprising XI which sent United fans into a mad panic an hour before kick-off.

Fans on Twitter were livid with McTominay's positioning with many suggesting he was "sniffing the other players' a-rses".
