David De Gea underlined his reputation as the world's best goalkeeper again tonight with a stunning save against Sevilla on the stroke of half-time.
The Spanish stopper had been kept busy through the first half but the Spanish side piled on the pressure as half-time approached.
A cross into the box saw Luis Muriel with a clear header six yards out but he could scarcely believe it when De Gea came to the rescue of Jose Mourinho's men with a crucial save.
Manchester United had made a slow start against Sevilla and the home side had the best of the early chances. Mourinho was forced into an early change when Ander Herrera pulled up injured in the Sevilla penalty box and on came Paul Pogba who had surprisingly been left out of the starting XI.
Having faltered in their last two Premier League away games, Manchester United are hoping to avoid carrying that form into Europe for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. Mourinho’s men have been somewhat out of form, losing at Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United before bouncing back with an FA Cup triumph at Huddersfield Town’s John Smiths Stadium.
Yet the challenges of those outings pale in significance against a trip to the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium, with Sevilla proudly boasting a home record that has seen them lose just one of their last 35 home matches in all competitions. They have been in much-improved form recently, a 5-1 defeat at Eibar marking their only failure in their last nine outings, with Vincenzo Montella hopeful of seeing them continue against United.
David de Gea to the rescue again for Manchester United.
