Shock news coming out of Juventus this morning as influential Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio has had his contract terminated. That makes the 32-year-old a free transfer and he will be leaving the club this summer after 25 years and top European clubs are on high alert as this news breaks.
Manchester United have been linked with Marchisio for the past five years and back in 2014, the Independent reported that the man in charge then, David Moyes, had even made a £20m offer for his services. The deal never materialised but TuttoSport in Italy reported last year that the club were still interested in signing the Italian playmaker.
Both themselves and Chelsea were thought to be tracking Marchisio, but understandably the player was not keen on moving away from his home for a quarter of a century. However, that bond has now been broken and Marchisio has been left with no option but to pursue another adventure.
Marchisio is certainly a serial winner having lifted four Italian Cups, three Italian Supercups and the seven Scudetti del Mito. This winning mentality along with his huge experience should make him a prime target for Jose Mourinho as this is what he likes in a midfielder. He may have been frustrated on deadline day, but United are able to sign players on loan or on a free transfer until the end of August.
It was an emotional goodbye from Juventus with the official club statement reading:
“Those child dreams made them. And how. And we all dreamed of him with him. Because seeing him grow and become, year after year, man, husband, father was the most gratifying thing there could be.
Having had the opportunity to accompany him on this path, discovering him champion, day after day, was a privilege and an honor.
And it will be a pleasure to follow him again, with any shirt on. Because that bianconera, we know, will always be part of him and his story.
Thanks for everything Claudio! And good luck!”
