Manchester United may be in good form under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but they are already looking ahead to the summer as they look to strengthen their squad. Their number one area for improvement in the squad is quite obvious, with the team lacking quality in the centre of defence and the board are now ready to put their hand in their pocket and fix the problem area with one big signing.
Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly has been United’s top transfer target for several weeks now and despite the departure of Jose Mourinho, it is thought that he is still the man United want. La Gazzetta Dello Sport, as reported by The Faithful MUFC, have reported that United are prepared to come up with a huge offer to tempt Napoli to sell their Senegalese defender.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has also gone on record to say he would listen to offers around the €120m mark, or £108m in English money and United are willing to go close to that figure in order to secure his signing.
The 27-year-old is at the peak of his career and would instantly improve United’s back line however they may wait until summer to finalise the deal once they have got the go-ahead from their new permanent manager. Liverpool have shown how important a top-class defender can be in transforming a side and United will be hoping that Koulibaly can have a similar impact to Van Dijk at Anfield, even if he costs over £100m.
This would be a huge statement of intent if they can get the deal done during this window they could set their sights on the top four once again. United must spend big on defenders if they are to put themselves in a position to fight for the title next season.
