Manchester United’s David De Gea To Top List Of The 5 Highest Paid Goalkeepers In World Football

Manchester United’s David De Gea To Top List Of The 5 Highest Paid Goalkeepers In World Football
11:14, 05 Sep 2018

Manchester United’s David De Gea is set to sign an incredible new contract at Manchester United worth a stonking £350k a week, making him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world. United are keen to keep hold of their star man and are hopeful this new deal will keep him at the club for the foreseeable future.

But which other goalkeepers have made it into the top five?

1) David De Gea - Manchester United - £400k a week

The best goalkeeper for most pundits is quite rightly top of this list. He currently earns 200k a week but his new deal will see him almost double that and put him level with Alexis Sanchez for highest paid player at United. Although his recent form has been a bit shady, including his performance at the World Cup for Spain, De Gea is still one of the top keepers in the world.

A £400k a week his new deal would see him soar to the top of the list and given United’s trouble at the moment, this would be money well spent.

2) Thibaut Courtois - Real Madrid - £220k a week

Courtois’ contract at Real Madrid is a significant increase on what he was earning at Chelsea, but is thought to be only slightly more than the figure the Blues were willing to offer, if he had signed a new contract.

This works out at £11.5m per season, 4m more than he was earning in London. Having scooped the Golden Glove award at the World Cup, Real Madrid got their man having given up on signing David De Gea.

3) Kepa Arrizabalaga - Chelsea - £192k a week

The most expensive goalkeeper in the world has a salary to match. Chelsea splashed out a whopping £71.6m to bring the Spaniard to London, eclipsing the previous world record fee set by Liverpool for Alisson Becker.

The reason his wage and bonuses are so high is down to the seven-year contract he has signed. That massive deal puts him as Chelsea’s second highest earner and he should be number one goalkeeper for the foreseeable future. He could potentially turn into a sound investment.

4) Manuel Neuer - Bayern Munich - £150k a week

This is perhaps one of the more surprising wages in world football when you compare it to David De Gea’s new deal. Neuer has been the top keeper in the world up until two seasons ago but injuries have played havoc with his progress. A shocking World Cup in which he was caught out playing as a midfielder v South Korea contributed to Germany’s downfall but Neuer is still rated as one of the top keepers around.

The gap in wages between himself and the Manchester United goalkeeper is simply staggering.

5) Gianluigi Buffon - PSG - £135K a week

Gigi Buffon has been one of the top goalkeepers in the world over the last two decades and after 17 years at Juventus, he finally moved on to pastures new in the summer. PSG were quick to snap up his services and give him a big pay rise.

Had he been at the start of his career now, Buffon would likely top this list. At 40-years-old, he is not doing too badly for himself. See our graph below to see how some of the other top keepers in world football rank.
