Manchester United will play Leeds for the first time since 2011 as their pre-season plans for 2019 have been revealed. They will take on Perth Glory at the Optus Stadium on July 13th before we get to see a clash of two of the finest managers in world football, as Jose Mourinho takes on Marcelo Bielsa.
The news was revealed by The World Game, who confirmed United’s game against Leeds is set to be played on the 17th July in the Optus Stadium,Perth. It’s been seven years since the two rivals last met, in the League Cup back in 2011. United came away 3-0 winners on that occasion with Michael Owen bagging a brace.
One of the most memorable clashes in recent years came at Old Trafford in 2010, when a sole Jermaine Beckford goal gave Leeds a memorable 1-0 win in the FA Cup, sending the away end absolutely nuts.
Now the two sides are set to meet once again and if Leeds keep up their stunning form, these two sides could be meeting on a far more regular basis once again. Leeds currently sit third in the league just a point off the automatic places and three points off the league leaders, Norwich.
If they can maintain their good start under Marcelo Bielsa, who has transformed the club since arriving in the summer, then we could get Leeds back in the Premier League which would be great for England’s top flight, given their history, support and wonderful Elland Road stadium.
This meeting of giants is on down under this summer.
