Manuel Lanzini To Return For West Ham As They Visit Rampant Liverpool

Liverpool host West Ham United on the back of a convincing Champions League first-leg win at Porto over a week ago. They'll now be looking to carry this form into the Premier League.

Their reward for putting one foot in the quarter-finals was a warm-weather training camp in Marbella last week.

Jurgen Klopp looked to take advantage of the break they had on FA Cup weekend, having been knocked out of the competition by West Bromwich Albion in the Fourth Round.

12th place West Ham are just four points above the relegation zone. They also had a week off after being knocked out of the cup at the same stage as Liverpool by this season's giant killers, Wigan Athletic.

Both sides go into this game with batteries recharged and players raring to return to action.

Manager musings

David Moyes

“As in previous years, Liverpool have great quality and one of the surprise packages of this season has been the scintillating form of Mohamed Salah.

“It didn’t quite work for him at Chelsea but he is the star man for Liverpool at the moment and maybe taken over from the departed Philippe Coutinho as the go-to player.

“You need to be compact when you play them and we have shown we can do that this season. Beyond that, though, I believe we have players who can exploit you if you let your guard down.

“Manuel Lanzini has a good chance of being involved after recovering from his hamstring injury and that is great for us because we will need him in the weeks to come.”

Jurgen Klopp

“West Ham changed system, and they’re just very mature right now. They’re not safe, but it’s more positive for them.

"They’re in a good moment and at times you play against a wall of eight. They have quick players who are a little bit hidden on the counter.

“We all know that it’s not easy. The good thing is we had time to prepare, and that’s a help. That’s why it’s a different game to Porto. It’s good organisation, and a clear plan. David is very experienced and knows what he’s doing.

“Immediately after the game against Porto, it was all about West Ham. We need an atmosphere. They will defend deep. We need to be ready for a difficult game.”

Team news

The visitors will be without long-term absentees Pedro Obiang, and Edimilson Fernandes. There will also be no Anfield return for Andy Carroll on this occasion, as the injury-prone striker is out with an ankle problem.

Playmaker Manuel Lanzini has been out with a hamstring injury, but the break came at a good time for him and he is likely to feature.

Elsewhere in the squad, Arthur Masuaku is suspended, while Winston Reid was doubtful with an illness but has since returned to training.

Liverpool are close to a clean bill of health now Nathaniel Clyne is back in training, but he’s lacking match fitness and could be eased back into the fold.

This means one of Trent Alexander-Arnold or Joe Gomez could continue on the right of the back four, and Klopp has plenty of team selection decisions throughout the XI, but unless he wants to give one of them a rest, the front three pick themselves.

Expected lineups

Liverpool: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Can, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Firmino, Mane.

West Ham: Adrian; Collins, Ogbonna, Creswell; Zabaleta, Noble, Kouyate, Antonio; Lanzini, Hernandez, Arnautovic.

Prediction

Liverpool are unbeaten at home in the league this season, but have drawn six of these games. If the Hammers can manage to keep Klopp’s attacking trio quiet for a reasonable amount of time, or even nick an early goal of their own, then Anfield will become tense as they’ll be expecting an easy win.

However, this is easier said than done, and the home side should have the firepower and patience to see off Moyes’ men regardless of any unexpected situations.

Liverpool 2, West Ham 0
