Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino seemed invincible a short while ago but cracks have started to show following three confidence crushing defeats in a row.
Defeats to Watford and Liverpool in the Premier League, then Inter Milan in the Champions League means Pochettino has lost three successive games for the first time since taking charge of Spurs in the summer of 2014, while it’s the club’s worst losing run since March 2014.
Bookmakers have reacted to the latest loss to Inter by slashing the Argentine’s odds to be the Premier League’s first managerial casualty of the new season, with William Hill now pricing the former Southampton boss at 25/1 for the chop, in from a whopping 66/1.
5 Managers Who Could Replace Pochettino At Tottenham
Spurs now make the trip down to the south coast on Saturday evening looking to avoid an unwanted losing streak that dates all the way back to 2004.
Should the capital club slump to a sorry defeat to Brighton then it will be the first time in 14 years that they’ve suffered four consecutive defeats.
The last time this sorry streak occurred was back in March-April 2004 when Tottenham, who were then managed by caretaker boss David Pleat, lost to Man Utd, Southampton, Chelsea and Everton. The Lilywhites would actually go a total of eight games without a win, as they followed that rotten run with a draw to Man City, a defeat to Bolton, a draw against Arsenal, then a loss to Aston Villa - all in the Premier League - and ended the season down in 14th.
Meanwhile, an irate Pochettino had a go at journalists after the Inter defeat following a question on why Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld were left out:
"Against Watford and against Liverpool, they were on the pitch," said Pochettino.
"Wow, what a question, such an easy question? [It's] easy to talk about the players that aren't here. I think we need to talk about football. Because, you know I think you force me to say something that is not good.
"You disrespect the players that showed better qualities than the opponent."
