Huddersfield Giants new boy Kevin Naiqama hopes that his experience can help his side compete with the likes of St Helens and Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Super League.

The 33-year-old agreed to join the Giants from the 2023 season last summer, arriving from Sydney Roosters in the NRL. He is no stranger to the Super League having spent three seasons with reigning champions St Helens between 2019 and 2021, winning three championships.

The Fiji captain hopes that his title-winning experience during his last stint in the Super League can help the Giants close the gap on the top two sides in the division.

He told The Sportsman: “I want to add value to this team. With the experiences that I’ve had, I’m hoping to share them with the team and add value in achieving the goals they want to achieve and climbing up that ladder.

“With Wigan and St Helens they’ve always probably been the top two teams of the competition. And with our team, we obviously want to challenge them and hopefully push for the spots up the table.”

Naiqama says he is still getting used to his new surrounding but he is raring to go and excited to get to know his new teammates.

“[It’s] very early days for myself, I’m still getting to know the players and the coaching staff but [I’m] looking forward to the journey ahead. It’s part of why I love rugby league.

“You meet new people and there’s a new challenge there in understanding how players work, understanding the cause. I’ve only been in training about two or three weeks now, so I’m really looking forward to the weeks ahead of building those combinations and getting to know everyone.”

Huddersfield Giants get their 2023 Betfred Super League campaign underway with a home clash against Warrington Wolves on Friday 24 September with a kick-off time of 7:45pm.
