For a country steeped in rugby league history, France have not had a great effect on the World Cup in recent decades. But with a squad boasting 22 Betfred Super League stars, this ought to be a time for Les Bleus to shine. Captain Ben Garcia and his Catalans Dragons teammate, the livewire Arthur Mourgue, are among the star names in Laurent Frayssinous' selection, and in all truth they should have far too much for the debutants from Greece. If they can be convincing in this opening game, Samoa's huge defeat in Newcastle on Saturday gives Frayssinous the chance to rest some of his bigger names in their second game against England before really going at Samoa in a battle for the second knockout spot in their final group match.
Steve Georgallis' first concern will be that his Greece side keep things respectable in their first go at a World Cup, but if they are to make any sort of impact in any of their three Group A games then the opening fixture against France is probably their best hope. South Sydney Rabbitohs star Lachlan Ilias will have to do a lot of heavy lifting in the halves if the Greeks are to have a chance of causing their experienced opponents any real trouble.
Sportsman stat: France have won only four of 15 games in the World Cup since it returned to a finals tournament format in 1995, with all of them coming in group fixtures.
Betfred odds: France 1/20, Greece 9/1, draw 25/1
