Lionel Messi is pretty good at football. This season he has been at his sumptuous best as Barcelona have opened up a seven-point gap at the top of the La Liga table and are in a good position to qualify for the last eight of the Champions League, with their tie against Lyon level at 0-0. Added to that, La Blaugrana have made it into the Copa del Rey final where they will face Valencia, as they look to keep their hopes of a treble alive.

Now Messi has hit the top of the charts for both goals scored and assists in Europe’s top five leagues this season. That is simply remarkable given the quality of strikers and attacking midfielders in those divisions, Messi is incredible, topping both statistics. His goal in the 3-1 over Rayo Vallecano this weekend was his 26th of the season which puts him some way ahead of the competitors.

Kylian Mbappe comes the closest as he has hit a huge 24 goals in Ligue 1 this season. The chasing pack is made up of Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Quagliarella both have 19 goals in Serie A whilst Man City’s Sergio Aguero has 18 goals, leading the way in the Premier League. In the Bundesliga, Robert Lewandowski leads the way with 17 league goals.

In terms of assists, it is much closer, with Messi on 12 this season. Chelsea forward Eden Hazard has had a great season with 11 assists whilst amazingly Bayern’s Josh Kimmich has made ten league goals.

These stats show just how good Messi has been this season. If he keeps this up surely a sixth Ballon d’Or is on its way. He came fifth last year for those of you who have forgotten...
