Sam Allardyce and Steve Bruce were surprise choices for Manchester United fans calling into a BBC Radio Manchester phone-in tonight.
With Jose Mourinho's sacking dominating the day's football news, it was not surprising that United fans were desperate to talk about the day's events at Old Trafford.
But some of the names suggested as possible replacements for the Portugese even caught the hosts by surprise.
"Steve Bruce," was one caller's emphatic reply when asked who should be the next man to take the United hot seat. "He's a man with United in his DNA. Zinedine Zidane can't speak the language and Mauricio Pochettino hasn't won anything."
The next call proved just as surprising as former Bolton, Newcastle, Everton and Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce was put up as the man to instill some much-needed discipline at Old Trafford. "Sam Allardyce would do a great job," explained the caller. When challenged about Allardyce's credentials, the argument was that Big Sam had managed England "and you can't get much bigger than that."
Mourinho was sacked this morning after a poor start to the season with United which sees them trailing in the wake of their fiercest rivals Liverpool and Manchester City. A tame 3-1 defeat at Anfield proved the last straw for the Portugese after more than two years with the club.
Reports tonight suggest Ole Gunnar Solksjaer will be named as United's interim manager until the end of the season when a permanent appointment will be made. Current Spurs boss Pochettino is the favourite but United would have to break the bank to lure the Argentinian to the club.
"He's failed on many levels and we've wasted 2 years"
"He's driving home for Christmas with £24m and he doesn't have to live in a hotel anymore"
