Stoke's Charlie Adam Controversially Sent Off For Crude Challenge On Wayne Rooney

The 'Mini Beast From The East' was dominating weather headlines going into this weekend but it was a diminutive, tenacious midfielder who made sports headlines for the wrong reasons on Saturday afternoon.

Stoke and Everton played out their Premier League game to the back-drop of snow flurries at the bet 365 Stadium, where Charlie Adam was heading for an early bath after being sent off by referee Martin Atkinson.

Adam miscontrolled the ball in the middle of the park and attempted to rectify the situation by lunging in with his studs up. Unfortunately for Adam, Wayne Rooney stole in to nick the ball and Adam's momentum took him through the former England international.

Stoke were left fuming by the decision as they are in desperate need of points in their battle to avoid relegation from the top-flight and it came at a crucial point in the contest, just 34 minutes into the game.

A man of Adam's experience should know better than to go lunging into a challenge like that and it was certainly a contentious decision - plenty on social media thought it was definitely a straight red but others aren't so sure.
