The 4 Greatest Chelsea v Arsenal Matches From The Premier League Era
20:50, 17 Aug 2018

Saturday evening's Premier League offering involves a heated rivalry between two old foes as Chelsea take on Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. They have been involved in some classic tussles over the years and this weekend's match involves two managers finding their feet in English football as Maurizio Sarri goes head-to-head with Unai Emery.

To help the new managers acquaint themselves with this rivalry, we take a look back at four classic Premier League matches between the teams

Arsenal 3-3 Chelsea - 4th September 1996
A Highbury classic as Ruud Gullit's Chelsea flew into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from a couple of their exotic additions, with Frank Leboeuf and Gianluca Vialli putting the Blues ahead. However, Arsenal produced a rip-roaring comeback to go 3-2 ahead thanks to goals from Paul Merson, Martin Keown and Ian Wright, although it was another English stalwart of the 1990s who would have the last laugh as Dennis Wise popped with a last minute equaliser.

Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal - 23rd October 1999
Vialli was in the Chelsea dugout as their manager by this point and it appeared as if his side were cruising as they went 2-0 up through goals from Tore Andre Flo and Dan Petrescu. However, Vialli hadn't accounted for a stunning hat-trick from Arsenal's unpredictable Nwankwo Kanu as the gangly striker scored all three goals in the final 15 minutes, including an absolutely stunning winner from a ridiculous angle. Kanu believe it?

Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal - 29th October 2011
There was another hat-trick from a Gunners player to treasure at Stamford Bridge in 2011 as Robin van Persie scored three after Frank Lampard had put Chelsea ahead. Andre Santos and Theo Walcott were also on target for Arsenal that day, whilst Juan Mata and John Terry scored for the home side. It capped a remarkable turnaround for Arsenal after they had made a woeful start to the season but this victory was their eighth in nine games, with the Gunners eventually finishing third in the table and Chelsea sixth.

Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal - 22nd March 2014
Finally, one for the Chelsea fans to treasure. It was an utterly bizzare game as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was incorrectly sent off for handball after fifteen minutes following a case of mistaken identity involving Kieran Gibbs. It capped a miserable afternoon for Arsenal, who were already 2-0 down when Oxlade-Chamberlain was given his marching orders, as Samuel Eto'o, Andre Schurrle, Eden Hazard, Mo Salah (remember him?) and Oscar (two) guided Jose Mourinho's men to an emphatic victory.

Arsene Wenger's 1,000th match in charge of Arsenal was on to forget and it added to his woeful record in head-to-head meetings with Jose Mourinho. When Wenger left the Gunners in 2018, he had just two wins to show from 19 managerial clashes in all competitions against Mourinho (drew seven, lost ten).

It was also the first time in Chelsea's history that they had scored six goals against Arsenal and it remains their largest every margin of victory against their London rivals. We await to see what the latest instalment brings...
