It’s got to the point that you simply can’t call Heung-min Son underrated anymore because he’s been absolutely class for some time now, years even, but this season in particular he’s been on fire.
The South Korean star proved once again why he’s such a valuable asset to Tottenham as his superb second-half goal helped the Premier League side record a stunning 3-0 victory in the first-leg of their Champions League tie over Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Tie over?
Too soon for that, but Mauricio Pochettino’s troops are in an enviable position following their scintillating second-half performance, with Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente also on the scoresheet.
But back to Son. It was a brilliant finish from the forward, who expertly side footed a volley into the roof of the net to open the scoring just after the break - see for yourself in the attached video below.
The goal was Son’s ninth in his last 11 games against Dortmund, who are surely sick of the sight of him, as are many Premier League teams - he now has 16 goals and nine assists to his name in 32 Spurs games this season (in all competitions).
He’s quite magnificently stepped up to the plate in Harry Kane’s absence, bagging four goals in four games since returning from international duty at the Asian Cup, meaning he’s one of the hottest players in Europe at the time of writing, and Spurs supporters were quick to lavish their hero in praise following his pulsating performance at Wembley.
One of the top inform players at the moment!! (@ChojyK)
Can we start talking about Heung Min Son being on the short list for player of the year? (@arlowhite)
Ill be honest his movement and ball control is Ronaldo-youth esque (@JohnnyBoyy05)
Son-shine!!!!! Come on you spurs! (@yacob_yohnson)
Son with a beautiful goal. No Kane no pain. #TOTBVB @Chemicalboyy
Kane is a beast of a player when it comes to being clinical but Son is technically so good. (@AKS)
Son hands down one of the most underrated players in the premier league (@alexrooney75)
He could play for any team on the planet. (@@kingJibz98)
Even a Liverpool fan poured praise on Son!
I considered Firmino and Robertson very underrated but overtime got the appreciation they deserved but Son Heung-min is criminally underrated. Consistently world class for 4 years and is stepping up with Kane out but is never mentioned in a list of the best players in the league. (@EnRouteAnfield)
Son Heung-min opens the scoring for Spurs with a brilliant finish 🙌
His ninth goal against Dortmund, they must hate playing him!
