15:47, 18 Sep 2018

Liverpool and PSG clash at Anfield tonight in one of the most eagerly anticipated group stage match-ups of the new Champions League campaign. Each club possesses a rip-roaring attacking trio that terrorises defences week in and week out, but which front three has scored the most club goals since the start of the 2017/18 season?

We take a look below.

Liverpool: Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino & Sadio Mane

Mo Salah enjoyed one of the most remarkable goalscoring campaigns in Premier League history, scoring an eye-popping 32 goals in 36 matches last term as he broke the 38-game league record previously held by the iconic trio of Luis Suarez, Alan Shearer and Cristiano Ronaldo (31).

The Egyptian also thrived in Europe, amassing 10 goals in Liverpool’s dazzling run through to the final, while there was an FA Cup goal too meaning in total he accumulated 44 goals in 52 fixtures in all competitions. And let’s not forget the 16 assists. Salah has since bagged two goals and two assists in 2018/19.

Since the beginning of the 2017/18 campaign, Salah’s teammate Roberto Firmino has played a hefty 59 matches, scoring 29 goals and setting up a further 19. Meanwhile, Mane has found the back of the net 24 times in 49 games, including four this season already.

As a trio Liverpool’s men fall agonisingly short of the 100 goal mark, on 99 goals, but should one of the famous three score tonight they will hit that prized landmark. Although for the sake of this article’s debate it will not count!

PSG: Edinson Cavani, Neymar & Kylian Mbappe

Neymar may often grab the headlines in Paris but it was his teammate - or rival - Edinson Cavani who topped the PSG charts in 2017/18.

The striker enjoyed a simply stunning goal-drenched season during which he blasted home 40 goals and bagged 11 assists in just 48 games for the French giants, including a league-high of 28 goals in 32 Ligue 1 games, and seven goals and an assist in the Champions League. The free-scoring Uruguayan has since added three goals and an assist in three games at club level so far this term.

Neymar still shone in the time he played though, scoring a very impressive 28 goals and registering a whopping 16 assists in a season which was halted by injury a couple months after Christmas. The Brazilian has since added four goals and another assist to his tally.

Fresh off the back of his World Cup success Kylian Mbappe has burst out of the blocks this season, scoring four goals and notching an assist in three club games. He’ll now be looking to go on and top last season’s tally of 21 goals and 15 assists in 46 games for PSG.

In total, since the start of last season, the PSG trio have scored a combined 100 goals and 45 assists, and let’s not forget that Neymar was ruled out from late February through to the end of the previous campaign.

Total: 100 Goals And 45 Assists In 135 Matches

Round-Up

So, as we head into tonight’s blockbuster duel, it’s PSG’s front three that have pipped Liverpool’s equivalent by one goal. Yes, one goal. And that’s in fewer matches, and despite Neymar missing a number of games through injury. Although you could argue that the Premier League is more competitive than its French counterpart, but that’s another argument for another day…
