The former Olympic sprinting champion Usain Bolt has long been keen on crossing over into the world into professional football and now, it seems, he’s may have the deal that’s he’s long cherished on the table.
The Jamaican athlete has been on trial with the Central Coast Mariners of Australia’s A-League and scored twice in one friendly encounter earlier this month, although his status at the club remains unclear.
“I can confirm Usain has been offered a contract by Central Coast Mariners,” his agent Ricky Simms said in a statement to Press Association Sport earlier today.
But, unusually, Mike Mulvey, claimed to have no knowledge of the offer when interviewed today follow his side’s curtain raiser. He even went as far as to openly question whether or not the 32-year-old would get into his side.
“We don’t talk about speculation. I don’t know anything about that. It is a few pay-grades above my level,” he said.
“I do appreciate how important this story is for the rest of the world. You’re just talking about speculation, I don’t know anything about what you’re talking about and that’s the God’s honest truth.
“You have a look at our front line today and you wonder whether he could get into any of those positions, wouldn’t you?”
A marketing dream for any sporting institution, Bolt reportedly turned down an offer that was well-publicised from the Maltese champions Valletta FC earlier in the week.
So has he reached a deal with the Mariners or not? Expect a typically box office unveiling in the coming days if he has been.
