West Ham United and Newcastle United are ready to go head-to-head as they prepare to battle it out for the signature of free agent Diego Reyes.
The Mexico international is available on a free transfer after his contract with Porto expired at the end of last season and the defender is wanted by both Newcastle and West Ham, according to Sky Sports.
West Ham have been busy during this summer's transfer window as new manager Manuel Pellegrini has been able to smash the Hammers' transfer record fee by signing Felipe Anderson and the Brazilian is amongst a host of new faces in the West Ham squad, with Issa Diop, Andri Yarmolenko, Lukasz Fabianski, Fabian Balbuena, Jack Wilshere and Ryan Fredericks all signing this summer.
Reyes is the latest player on West Ham's radar after a relatively unsuccessful spell with Porto. The 25-year-old joined Porto from Mexican side Club America in 2013 but he struggled to nail down a regular starting place in the squad, spending the 2015/16 campaign on loan at Real Sociedad before going on loan to Espanyol on 2016/17.
Reyes was a relative success in La Liga but he never really settled in Portugal and made just 12 league appearances for Porto last season.
Reyes is keen to make a fresh start as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of Mexico's World Cup squad.
The centre back has made 53 appearances for his country and he is a defender who is confident with the ball at his feet, which might suit West Ham and Newcastle as they both have managers who like to play a passing style of football.
The Premier League sides face competition for the signature of Reyes though as Fenerbahce have offered the defender a contract.
