What Wolves Have To Do To Become The Best Promoted Team In Premier League History

You can't fail to be impressed with Wolves this season.

They've quickly settled into life in the Premier League and on Saturday they held Manchester United to a draw at Old Trafford with a hard-working display which even earned praise for Jose Mourinho.

Last season they were the entertainers of the Championship with some memorable goals and a showreel of impressive displays.

It got us thinking about who were the best teams to be promoted from the Championship and what Wolves would have to do to earn a place on the list. You may be surprised to see which team tops our list.

5: Reading 2006/07

Reading bossed the Championship to go up as Champions, racking up 106 points. The following season, the Royals finished eighth in the top flight and narrowly missed out on a UEFA Cup spot. Reading clocked up an impressive 55 points.

4: Sunderland 1999/2000

Managed by Peter Reid and with Kevin Philips banging in goals, Sunderland secured a very respectable top half finish and were not a million miles off securing a European spot after winning promotion.

3: Blackburn Rovers 1992/93

Cashed-up Blackburn won promotion through the play-offs, beating Leicester City in the final. They made a steady start to life in the top flight and three years later lifted the Premier League trophy under Kenny Dalglish with the goals of Alan Shearer proving critical as they held off a determined challenge from Manchester United.

2: Newcastle United 1993/94

The Magpies came up as First Division Champions and invested heavily for their promotion. Their own shooting star Andy Cole went on to form a fine partnership with Toon hero Peter Beardsley.

Boss Kevin Keegan guided Newcastle to a very respectable top half finish, even ahead of Arsenal.

1: Ipswich Town 2000-2001

The Tractor Boys didn't spend much after securing promotion and their chances of staying up looked slim.

But their established, youthful squad proved formidable foes in the Premier League and at one point they went on an unbeaten run of 15 games. They finished fifth under George Burley, 14 adrift of eventual champions Manchester United. Burley was awarded Manager of the Year for his troubles. They also secured a UEFA Cup spot in a season where the likes of Richard Wright, Matt Holland, Marcus Stewart and Jim Magilton wrote their names into Ipswich folklore.
