Despite losing Andre Gomes and Denis Suarez to hamstring injuries during their win over Tottenham Hotspur, Ernesto Valverde would’ve been happy for the most part with Barcelona’s display.
A rocky couple of minutes aside, the Catalans, particularly in the first half, played some wonderful football. Now they face AS Roma, the side who they beat to Malcom’s signature at the 11th hour, something that’s sure to add spice to this particular clash.
The Italians have also played the north Londoners in their only pre-season game to date, and they were comfortably beaten 4-1.
Let’s take a look at three things that could affect the outcome of this one…
Roma to limit the space between the lines
If there was one aspect of Roma’s defeat against Spurs, it was the ease with which they were carved open, time and time again.
In many ways it was reminiscent of their Champions League defeat to Liverpool.
After taking an early lead through Patrik Schik, the Italians just collapsed.
Eusebio di Francesco has to ensure that the gaps in between defence and midfield, as well as midfield and attack are kept to a minimum.
By allowing Barcelona to work those spaces, they run the risk of being pulled apart again, and Arthur won’t need asking twice to work his magic.
Fuzato’s credentials to be tested
Now that Alisson Becker has departed for Liverpool, Roma have to rely on Antonio Mirante and young Daniel Fuzato in goal.
The latter, a summer signing from Palmeiras, is likely to get the nod here, purely to give him minutes and to see how he copes against a Barca side with their tails up.
Though he understands that he isn’t first choice for the Italian side, a decent run out here will give Monchi and Di Franceso something to ponder.
Known for his athleticism, fearlessness and bravery, Fuzato will have an experienced back three in front of him, so has no need to make any rash decisions in order to impress his paymasters.
Dzeko vs Lenglet
Bound to be one of the battles most worth watching in this match.
Lenglet has already shown himself to be a consummate central defender who doesn’t panic, even under the most intense pressure.
That’s something Dzeko will provide and it will be interesting to see how the youngster copes with the physical aspects of the Bosnian’s game.
The striker is awkward, yet skilful and won’t give Lenglet a moment’s peace. It’s likely that whoever comes out on top in this tussle will end up on the winning side.
