Andy Murray has been selected for Great Britain’s Davis Cup team for the group stage of this year's event, marking a first call-up for the three-time Grand Slam champion since 2019.

Murray will join British number one Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and world doubles number one Joe Salisbury for the group stage of the competition in Glasgow in September.

Twenty-year-old Jack Draper, who reached his first Masters 1000 quarter-finals at the Canadian Open in August, has missed out despite having a meteoric rise to the verge of the top 50 rankings this season.

Murray has experienced success in the Davis Cup in the past, winning the 104th edition of the competition in 2015 as Great Britain defeated Belgium in the final in Ghent. It was Murray who indeed scored the vital title-winning point to secure Britain their first title since 1936.

And the 35-year-old is relishing his return, particularly with it being in his home town.

“It’s always special playing in a Davis Cup tie in front of a home crowd,” said Murray. "Some of the best moments of my career have come representing my country in the Davis Cup, so to be a part of the team again means a lot."

His team-mate Norrie is pleased to have him back on the team, knowing how invaluable the two-time Wimbledon champion's experience is.

He said: "Having Andy in the team of course is a real boost. Both him and Dan were here in 2015 when we went on to win the competition and having that experience is really important, but it also drives the rest of us to get there as well."

Davis Cup captain Leon Smith said the selection process was "tougher than ever". He confirmed they will be further adding to the team with a fifth member in the next few weeks, giving Draper and doubles specialist Neal Skupski, who won the Canadian Open title with Dutchman Wesley Koolhof on Sunday, another opportunity to make the squad.

The group stage will be hosted in four different cities: Glasgow, Bologna, Hamburg and Valencia, with those who progress to the knockout stages travelling to Malaga in November for the finals tournament.
