Five Famous Athletes Turned Boxers

Five Famous Athletes Turned Boxers

The sporting word is currently gripped by the upcoming bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor with the latter set to exchange the octagon for the ring in one of the toughest challenges of recent years.

McGregor has swept all before him inside the cage and he will now attempt to cross the codes and take on one of the greatest boxers of all time, and it is fair to say that the majority of sports fans are not giving him a chance in Las Vegas next month.

McGregor certainly isn't the first to swap disciplines to head into the ring, and he won't be the last, with plenty of athletes swapping their sport for a tilt at the big time in the world of boxing down the years, and we take a look at some of the more notable sport swappers in recent memory...

Katie Taylor - Football to Boxing

We start with one of more successful transitions with Irish superstar Katie Taylor perhaps the most successful female boxer of all time.

Not many will know that Taylor actually started out her sporting life as a footballer though, in fact she was good enough to represent her country at senior level on no less than eleven occasions. Taylor even scored for Ireland twice in qualifying for Euro 2009 before making her final appearance in a green shirt in 2009 and even manged to be sent off during her International career.

Taylor decided to give boxing her full attention, and it worked. She picked up a Gold Medal at the London Olympics and now, as a professional, she is well on her way to a world title.

Sonny Bill Williams - Rugby to Boxing and back again!

One of the most famous and successful sportsmen in New Zealand, Sonny Bill Williams has never been able to make his midn up about what sport to play.

He started life as a Rugby League player, before moving to Union, back to League, and then back to Union, where he currently remains as one of the most feared players in the sport. He has been a regular in the All Blacks team in both codes, and of course recently entered the spotlight for getting sent off in the 2nd Test match against the Lions,  but he has never been afraid of physical confrontation...

In and around his rugby career, Williams made his pro Boxing debut in 2009 and it was a career that would see him go unbeaten in seven fights in his native New Zealand. It is fair to say that those seven fights weren't at the very highest level but he won them all well and became the Heavyweight Champion of New Zealand to prove he was more than capable of mixing it in the ring.

Curtis Woodhouse - Football to Boxing

Curtis Woodhouse is best known to the majority of sports fans as a top level football in the Premier League and Championship, but he is one of very few who managed to take part in two professional sports at the same time.

Whilst still playing for Rushden & Diamonds in the Conference, Woodhouse turned his attention to a boxing career, which most assumed would fizzle out before it had even began.

Boxing had always been his first love and despite the doubters, and some tough defeats, Woodhouse rose all the way to become British light welterweight champion in one of the great Cinderella stories of recent years. Woodhouse would lose the title in his next fight before retiring, but he had already achieved his goal.

Pro footballer to British Champion boxer.

Anthony Mundine - Rugby League to Boxing

We head to Australia for our next example with Anthony Mundine one of the more colour athletes from down under. He was a huge success as a Rugby League player in the 90s, indeed he was the highest paid player in the NRL, but he gave that all up at the turn of the century to pursue a career in the ring.

A hugely controversial figure out of the ring due to his views, Mundine has tasted some good success inside the ropes with lower level world titles to his name at various weight divisions. He has often come up short at the very highest level and remains a divisive figure amongst Australian sports fans, but he technically remains activa, and was last seen being beaten against Danny Green in February of this year.

An elite Rugby League player and a world champion boxer all before he was 33. Impressive.

Freddie Flintoff - Cricket to Boxing

Finally, we have to bring up the short-lived boxing career of Freddie Flintoff who swapped the bat and ball for the boxing gloves back in 2012. Having recently retired from cricket due to injury, Flintoff took up the challenge to have a pro fight under the tutelage of Shane McGuigan, and the whole process was filmed for a TV documentary.

Flintoff got in the ring with American Richard Dawson and won on points, but it wasn't pretty and it was clear that despite all the training, the former test captain wasn't about to keep his pro career going any longer than one fight...
