Floyd Mayweather has opened up the possibility of coming out of retirement to fight the UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in a crossover superfight.
The undefeated former champion (51-0) received a challenge from the Russian fighter, who was filmed by the CEO of Mayweather promotions in Leonard Ellerbe at an event in Russia saying the following.
“Hey, let’s go Floyd. We have to fight now. 50-0 vs 27-0. Two guys, never lose,” Khabib said while alongside Ellerbe.
“Let’s go! Why not? Because in the jungle, only one king. Of course I am the king, because he cannot drop McGregor, but I dropped him easily. Let’s go.”
It was thought that the 41-year-old was going to ride off into the sunset after his last megafight with Conor McGregor in 2016, but he’s taken to Twitter to suggest he’d be open to the prospect of another bout.
True to his name, though, the money would have to be right.
‘CBS, Showtime and MGM Grand get the checkbook out!’ he said, before referring to the video of Khabib calling him out.
The undefeated MMA fighter Khabib has himself just defeated the Irishman McGregor in what was billed as the biggest fight in the history of UFC.
The looming presence of ‘The Notorious’ hangs over the prospect of this fate, though, as he has also seemed open to the prospect of stepping back into the boxing world for another crack at the champ.
Is this just a bit of self-promotion from one of the best in that business or the sign of a genuine willingness to fight? Watch this space…
