The attention of the British Tennis public has rightly be on Andy Murray for the past decade or so but the brillaint Scot could be about to share the limelight with his female counter-parts. The Davis Cup was secured on the men's side in 2015 but the spotlight could fall on the Fed Cup in 2017 with new captain Anne Keothavong building something special in the ladies game.

The British Ladies Fed Cup Team are in the middle of a week long campaign, which if successful could see them enter the World Group II section and so far the signs have been promising.

So Far So Good

So far this week, we have seen the British ladies sweep past both Portugal and Latvia with the minimum of fuss, and there is a real momentum building behind them at the moment. The team are being led by Johanna Konta who's rise in the sport over the past 18 months or so has been simply sensational.

Konta has already enjoyed a successful start to 2017 with the title in Sydney followed up with a run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with only eventual champion Serena Williams halting her progress. That form has seen Konta rocket into the top ten of the world rankings, and provided she can stay fit and well, the British Fed Cup Team are always going to be in with a chance in these ties.

Konta is given able support by Heather Watson, who remains a match for any player in the top 100, whilst captain Keothavong will be desperate for the supremely talented Laura Robson to get back to her best to add further strength to what is looking like an exciting team.

Keothavong will be hoping the team can continue their good run this week, which will hopefully lead to a play-off match in April as they bid to enter the big time of the Fed Cup, which is where they want to be. It's going to be hard to emulate the Davis Cup success on the men's side but the signs are encouraging of late and whisper it quietly, but maybe, just maybe, British ladies tennis is starting to look up.
