Kyle Edmund has beaten Gregor Dmitrov in the quarter finals of the Australian Open in four sets. The Britain won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to set up a semi final clash with either Rafael Nadal or Marin Cilic on Thursday.
Who needs Andy Murray? With the former world number one ruled out through injury nobody really expected the remaining Britain Edmund to go that deep into the tournament. But in a week where he continues to break records, the world number 49 is the first Brit to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open other than Murray since John Lloyd in 1977. Added to that, Edmund is the first Britain to reach the quarter final of any tennis major other than Murray since Tim Henman in the 2004 US Open.
Henman watched on from the stands and the Yorkshireman played a stunning match to never really look in trouble against the world number 3 Dmitrov. The Brit won the first set 6-4 before Dmitrov levelled the match at 1-1 taking the second set 6-3. Edmund would edge ahead taking the third 6-3 before both players exchanged breaks of the serve in the fourth with Edmund taking the final one to serve out the match at 5-4. The first time Edmund has beaten a top five player in the world and what a time to do it.
The Britain reached the fourth round of the US Open in 2016 which had been his best performance in a major before this week in Melbourne.
He beat eleventh seed Kevin Anderson in the first round before knocking out Denis Istomin, Nikolaz Basilashvili and Andreas Seppi before this quarter final win.
Edmund looks like he belongs playing the best tennis of his career and he will be the third highest ranked player left in the tournament in the semi finals. Whatever happens now he will move into the top thirty in the world, it's onwards and upwards for Kyle Edmund.
