Nick Kyrgios, the Australian tennis player who continuously adds such much needed bite and fight to the game, has dramatically pulled out of the French Open at the last minute.
Kyrgios hasn't recovered from an elbow injury. He could be replaced in his first round match by India's Prajnesh Gunneswaran at Roland Garros to play yet another Australian, Bernard Tomic. Tomic has partnered his compatriot in doubles and played in the Davis Cup. Unfortunately the meeting will now not go ahead.
The 23 year-old Kyrgios announced in a statement:
"Unfortunately I have to withdraw from this years French Open. Having consulted with my team and medical experts it is deemed too risky for me to step out and potentially play 5 sets on clay, especially as I have not payed a singles match in two months.
"I've worked hard to be ready and desperately wanted to play Roland Garros, which is very special to me but I literally ran out of time. A dramatic spike in load on my elbow could potentially put me back to square one and with the grass court season around the corner it is something I can not and will not risk. The good news is I am finally pain free, working hard and enjoying my training and am looking forward to being back in singles action in Stuttgart.
"I'm sorry to those fans that bought tickets to watch me play but am also grateful for the continued love and support. NK."
Kyrgios, who was seeded 21 and is currently ranked 23rd in the world,, joins such huge names as Roger Federer and Andy Murray to be not competing in the clay tournament this year. Rafael Nadal, once again, remains favourite to win the French Open.
Kyrgios last played on Saturday in the Lyon Open, when he won the doubles alongside Jack Sock.
