The Five Longest Runs Without A Win In Premier League History

Leeds United are currently on an eight-game streak without a win but it is nowhere near the worst that the Premier League has seen

Leeds United are in disarray under Jesse Marsch in the Premier League. Despite scoring first at Elland Road against Fulham on Sunday, the Whites went on to lose 3-2 to extend their torrid run without a win to eight matches.

Fans are slowly turning on the American coach as results and performances fail to meet their expectations and the club have slipped into the relegation zone for the first time this season. Based on their form, they can have no arguments about their current position.

But for all the negativity spewing out of the Yorkshire club at the minute, this run of eight games is nothing compared to the worst this division has ever seen. Here are the top five longest runs without a win in Premier League history.

Nottingham Forest - 19 (1998-99)

The Tricky Trees went on a dismal run stretching 19 games without a win the last time they were in the Premier League before 2022-23. Despite picking up six points in their first three matches, they underwent a rapid decline, picking up just seven points in that period of fixtures. Forest were relegated to the First Division and it took them 23 years to make their way back as they were promoted from the Championship in the summer.

Aston Villa - 19 (2015-16)

Everyone remembers Villa’s plight in 2015-16, it was a great year for punters who would have been betting against them every week. Things were looking good when they opened the season with a victory over newly-promoted AFC Bournemouth under Remi Garde. Then things went downhill very quickly. Villa picked up just five points from their next 19 league matches which saw them spiral down the league while defender Joleon Lescott tweeted car pictures from his pocket.

Their torrid form was broken up with a win against Crystal Palace but they then went on to lose 12 of their final 13 matches, sacrificing their record as a Premier League mainstay.

Sunderland - 20 (2002-03)

Before Sunderland were awful and relegated in 2016-17, there was their equally abysmal 2002-03 campaign. In both years, the Black Cats finished rock bottom of the Premier League but in the earlier nightmare relegation, they had a gutless run of 20 matches without a victory. To make matters worse, it was their final 20 games of the season where they were under the management of Howard Wilkinson followed by Mick McCarthy.

Norwich City - 20 (2019-20/2021-22)

Regarded as one of the biggest ‘yo-yo’ clubs around, Norwich endured one of the worst runs without a win in the Premier League in recent memory. It was spread over the course of two campaigns, when they were relegated to the Championship in 2019-20 and then their first season back in 2021-22. The Canaries lost 10 straight matches either side of their year back in the second tier.

Just when then-boss Daniel Farke brought an end to the winless streak with a victory over Brentford, he was sacked.

Derby County - 32 (2007-08)

Derby County not only have the worst points total in Premier League history with 11, but they hold the record for the longest run without a win, a staggering 32 games. The Rams won just one match in their last year in the top-flight and both their winless run and woeful points tally both highlight that this was the worst side to have ever graced the Premier League. Billy Jewell kickstarted the groundbreaking run and it was completed by Paul Jewell.

A season forever etched in history and one that Derby supporters have tried to erase from memory.

Leeds certainly have a long way to go until they tussle with these clubs for the longest winless runs in the Premier League but if they don’t improve, they could easily start closing in on this list which no club wants to be a part of.
