Just when you think you've seen everything on the tennis court ...

One of the game's greatest ever Roger Federer produced this outrageous shot in his third round US Open clash against Nicholas Kyrgios.

Federer takes the shot outside the court, making a nonsense of the net to leave Kyrgios flat-footed. The amazing piece of skill left fans lost for words and helped Federer to a convincing 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 victory which earned him a place in the fourth round.

@oliverbrown_tel wrote on Twitter: "Roger Federer with one of the shots of this or any other year. Just preposterous."

Modest to the last, Federer told fans: "I went for it, so I guess I deserved it.”

"It really only happens on a centre court of this size. The funny thing about this shot is, I didn’t think about it until I hit it. I actually didn't think I was going to get it."

“I’m very happy to have won, I’m happy it was three.

"At the beginning it was hard to get any sort of rhythm but I enjoy playing against Nick, he always keeps you on the edge and it’s quite entertaining also for the opponent.”

The shot also won praise from his vanquished opponent. On court microphones picked up Kyrgios saying that Federer's amazing effort "the greatest shot you've ever seen."

In the post-match press conference, Kyrgios was asked about the shot. "It was unbelievable," he said with a smile. I’m probably going to post it on Instagram."

Federer now faces John Millman in the fourth round. “He’s a real hard-working player. He’s just come to Switzerland to train with me and he’s a great guy.”
