Manchester City have the all-important lead over their Premier League title rivals Liverpool and it is down to their ever-reliable hitman Sergio Aguero. The Argentine drive home a rasping finish from a tight angle to make it seven goals in his last seven games against the Reds.
Aguero can’t get enough of those Liverpool defenders but it was, in fact, the visitors who came closest to taking the lead in one of the most bizarre scenarios we have seen this season. A flowing Liverpool move lead to Sadio Mane hitting the post before John Stones and Ederson combined to almost score a hilarious own goal!
Luckily for the home fans, Stones raced back to clear the ball 11mm before it crossed the line completely and City have looked on top for the majority of the first half. Danilo and Aymeric Laporte may not be Pep Guardiola's first choice full-backs but both of them have coped well with the threat of Liverpool’s wingers, forcing Sadio Mane and Mo Salah infield towards Fernandinho at every opportunity.
Yellow cards for Vincent Kompany, Dejan Lovren and Laporte could prove critical in the second half with a red card for either side a serious possibility. One would think Klopp will be instructing his forwards to get at that Man City defence with that in mind, whilst Xherdan Shaqiri could certainly be a game-changing substitute from the bench.
We have been treated to an absolute thriller so far, let’s hope it continues for the second 45 minutes.
