Following in the intimidating footsteps of one Tyson Fury, WBO international heavyweight Dillian Whyte is reportedly about to sign ‘a lucrative, multi-fight contract with promoter Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc’.
BoxingScene takes ‘multiple sources’ that Whyte will become the second top ten heavyweight to join the burgeoning Top Rank, well, ranks. Fury announced his own deal last month.
A pro since 2011, Whyte is now in line for his next bout in the summer, in either June or July, with an official announcement said to be being made once his contract with Top Rank and their partners ESPN, who will be streaming the fight, has been officialized.
The Brit, who currently holds a 25-1 record (18 coming from knockouts) has been a notable figure in that swarm surrounding Anthony Joshua, clamouring for his belts but with deals unable to come into fruition.
Whyte was said to be AJ’s third choice for his opponent, behind Deontay Wilder, and The Gypsy King himself, Fury. Negotiations have failed to reach an agreement between all concerned parties.
Whyte’s compatriot Joshua currently holds the IBF, IBO, WBA, and WBO titles. Joshua will next take on Jarrell ‘Big Baby’ Miller at Madison Square Garden in New York on June 1st.
The venue - or indeed the opponent - for Whyte’s next fight has yet to be decided. Whyte has fought just once in the USA, two years ago at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska, against Malcolm Tann, and won.
With both Fury and Whyte going to be on the Top Rank books, a showdown between the two pugilists could well be forthcoming. What a fight that could be!
Whyte last fight was back in December, a knock-out victory over Dereck Chisora. Whyte is undefeated in the ring since 2015, when he lost by TKO to Anthony Joshua.
